TMS Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease affects the nerve cells in the brain. Symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. After diagnosis, treatments can help relieve symptoms, but there is no cure. Still, studies have shown significant results when using transcranial magnetic stimulation for Parkinson’s disease. Regular low- or high-frequency TMS can diminish tremors, freezing, and rigidity in patients. Research also shows that the treatment has greater success in reducing symptoms in akinetic-rigid Parkinson’s versus those displaying the tremor-dominant form of the condition. Unlike other treatments, TMS is non-invasive.

TMS for Parkinson’s is still a relatively new area of exploration, but the studies are very promising. Proven research supporting TMS’s efficacy as a treatment for depression suggests clear and robust benefits for Parkinson’s symptoms as well.

Here’s what we know about how it works. For depression, TMS can stimulate activity in parts of the brain connected with mood. By extension, it may also potentially affect abnormal or under-active parts of the brain in Parkinson’s patients. With TMS brain stimulation therapy, patients experience little to no pain, and the treatment uses no radiation or electrical stimulation. Currently, research and studies are in the works to explore further how TMS can help those with Parkinson’s as well as other conditions and diseases like ALS, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others. At NeuroSpa, our goal is to apply the most advanced technology and research developments to ensure the best results for our patients.
