JaVale McGee added to USA Basketball Olympic Team

RENO, Nev. - Nevada men's basketball alumnus JaVale McGee (2006-08) was added to the USA Basketball Olympic Team, the organization announced. McGee and Keldon Johnson (San Antonio Spurs) join the team as replacements for Bradley Beal (COVID-19 protocols) and Kevin Love (calf).

The announcement makes McGee the second Wolf Pack Olympian, joining diver Krysta Palmer, at the Tokyo Games, which are scheduled for July 23-Aug. 8.

McGee will also have the unique opportunity to become a second-generation Olympic Gold Medalist. His mother, Pamela McGee, was part of the gold medal-winning women's basketball team at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

He was named a finalist for the 2021 Olympic Team back in March, but did not make the final roster at the time. McGee's prior USA Basketball experience includes being a member of the senior men's national team from 2010-12.

Since being drafted 18th overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2008 NBA Draft, McGee has played 13 seasons in the league, most recently playing 46 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets this past campaign. He is a three-time NBA champion, capturing two titles with the Golden State Warriors (2016-17, 2017-18) and one with the Los Angeles Lakers (2019-20).

McGee opted to declare for the NBA Draft following his sophomore season at Nevada (2007-08) in which he averaged 14.1 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 52.9 percent from the field.

The men's basketball competition runs from July 24-Aug. 7, with the United States opening against France Sunday, July 25, at 5 a.m. PT. The U.S., seeking its seventh gold of the past eight Olympic tournaments, is in Group A for preliminary-round action, joined by France, Iran, and the Czech Republic.
