Kiribati Sport Fishing Club May Competition

The Kiribati Sport Fishing Club hosted its first fishing competition for 2022 on Saturday 14th of May with weigh in at the Horizon Cafe in Takoronga.

18 teams attended the May competition including Takgee, Delish fish, Whiskey, Heineken, King fisher, 2 APS, Lady Mary, Nei Boiboi, Teribauati, Otimeta, Blue bite, Salap, Jowi and Brandy. Each team had 3 to 7 anglers per team to register per boat.

The weigh in at the Horizon Café attracted local residents, media representatives and the members of the Kiribati sport fishing community that were keen to witness the catches. The Horizon café proudly sponsored the event and prizes were issued based on different categories such as weight, quantity and fish types such as Yellowfin tuna, Barracuda, Wahoo, Marlin, and Dog Tooth.

Team Jowi was awarded the winning team for the highest total species weight category whilst the winner for the highest number of tuna caught was awared to team Teribauati.  The Honorable Minister of Ministry of Environment and Agricultural Development (MELAD), Honourable Ruateki Tekaiara had the honor to present the prices to the winning teams.

The Kiribati Sport Fishing competition is a monthly event and attracts fishing enthusiasts and anglers, both men and women.  Sponsors have already been secured for the June and July independence competitions and look forward with anticipation to the catches during the weigh in events.

Kiribati Sport Fishing Club December Competition  

The Kiribati Sport Fishing Club (KSFC) hosted its final fishing competition on 28 December 2020 with the weigh in at Freddy’s Bar in Takoronga.

A total of 7 teams registered including Christine, Takgee, Black Pearl, Beauty Shark, Lady Mary, Nei Buroburo and Black Belt. Each team consisted of 3 to 7 anglers.

The competition was open to both women and men, with the aim of encouraging fishing enthusiasts to continue and maintain their skill and knowledge of fishing as a job or hobby.

The teams were judged on the weight and quantity of their catch which included Yellowfin tuna, Tuna, Barracuda, Wahoo, Marlin, and Dog Tooth.

Black Pearl took out the prize for highest number of tuna species caught and the best female angler prize was awarded to Ms. Taara Tokamaen Maiu from team Christine. A special award was also presented to the Lady Mary team for reeling in a 149lbs blue marlin. Lady Mary also too out the overall winner’s prize.

Chairman of the KSFC Mr. Ritiati Ariera closed the event by thanking all the sponsors for their generous support and participants for their continuous interest in fishing. The KSFC has more exciting competitions planned for 2021.

New Resort opens in Buariki, North Tarawa

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) is delighted to announce the opening of the NEMAT Resort in BUARIKI, North Tarawa from 01 December 2020.

Management says that the resort is ideal for getaways, gatherings & parties, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

Situated on a stretch of brilliant white sandy beach overlooking the turquoise lagoon, the property features both contemporary & locally designed houses/huts and buias with two Maneaba. For group travel, the resort can accommodate a maximum of 70 guests.

Services include a bar, café, and 24 hours restaurant services whilst the traditional beach umbrella and beach lounges offer the ideal spot for a quiet retreat. Complimentary kayaks, guitars and ukuleles are also available onsite and the beach volleyball court is perfect for team building activities.

Abemama Island and Food Security

 The Tourism Authority of Kiribati team had visited Abemama from the 1st to the 16th of November 2020 for a follow-up on development of eco-tourism products through assisting local communities on ways to enhance food security in the context of global climate change using the tourism sector.

The team conducted consultations with active communities and villages on existing and new eco-tourism products for industry partnership development. Agri-domestic skills supporting traditional culinary practices and experiences have incentivise communities with initiatives within the tourism industry at communities based levels.

Abatiku islet had been declared and recognized as a Marine Protected Area to conserve and safeguard marine resources for the welfare and wellbeing of its inhabitants. Reina and Baretoa villages and other factories Development have passed the trial of partnership in outsourcing skills and knowledge to future visitors and tourists on the preservation of food against the impacts of climate change. An official from Tourism, Ms Kiarake Karuaki stated how these activities have motivated communities in Abemama to be prepared toward challenges of food security as climate change unfolds.

A spokesman, Mr Iotebwa Etuati appreciated more alternatives introduced to them, through the tourism industry as a source of revenue and sustainable development. This trip had offered first hand experiences for participants and targeted communities in generating strategies toward food security.

The trip was funded by the Food Security project which is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) -Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) through  the United Nations Development Programme, and executed by the Environment and Conservation Division under the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agriculture Development.         

 

Tourism Kiribati Releases ‘10 Things To Do’ E-Brochures

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) has released its new travel information e-brochures on “10 things to do on Kiritimati and Tarawa”.

The e-brochures highlight the 10 most popular things that travellers can experience in Kiritimati Islands and on Tarawa.

Kiribati is a niche driven destination and the brochures are aimed to guide travellers as they plan their adventure through the islands of Kiribati. Experiences listed on the 10 things to do brochures are information in the historical WWII Battle Field Tours, cultural tour, diving, sightseeing, fishing, surfing and bird-watching and whale watching.

These brochures are part of the Tourism Authority of Kiribati’s aims of increasing visitor engagement and improving their experiences in Tarawa and Kiritimati.
