Ed Harris was born on November 28, 1950 in Englewood, New Jersey and graduated from Tenafly High School in 1969, where he was a star athlete and theater buff. He then enrolled at the University of Oklahoma to study drama. After a year, he moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts.
Harris's first major film role was in Borderline, but his break came in 1983 with The Right Stuff, playing astronaut John Glenn. This led to a similar role in the Oscar winning drama Apollo 13. More recently, Harris has worked in films such as The Truman Show, Pollock, A History of Violence, A Beautiful Mind, National Treasure: Book of Secrets and The Hours.
Harris made his film directing debut in 2000 with Pollock. He has also directed a number of theater productions and has had an active stage-acting career. Harris is married to actress Amy Madigan, they have one daughter together.
