These fish somewhat resemble the Northern Puffer which is generally a good food fish. The smooth puffer is a risky catch. We used to fish for Northern Puffers in NJ, but not now…
My parents and I in the 1960s used to catch Northern Pufferfish in Barnegat Bay, NJ. They made a lovely breakfast. But if I still lived there, I no longer would fish for Puffer fish, because of the risk of catching Smooth Puffer fish, which could prove disastrous, due to toxicity!
