For years a group of developers has been working hard on making an unofficial sequel to Mother 3 called Mother 4. But after a wave of DMCA takedowns from Nintendo, the team went underground but resurfaced recently after rebranding its project as Oddity.

Although Oddity is no longer the unofficial Mother 3 sequel, it’s still influenced by the series. A new trailer shows gameplay that’s quite similar to the original Game Boy Advance Mother 3 gameplay. But technical flourishes and graphical improvements also show that this is a modern video game production. You can watch the trailer here.

The Mother 4 fan project has been talked about since as far back as 2013. But in 2017, the developers announced on the project’s subreddit that it needed to rebrand the project due to the wave of takedown notices issued by Nintendo on fan projects.

This is despite how Mother 4 itself was never actually notified by Nintendo. Rebranding the game was simply a precaution, though it’s understandable considering how much work and effort already went into the project.

Still, there hasn’t been an official Mother game since 2006 and there’s been no official localization of Mother 3 either. But at least fans have lovingly made homages like Oddity, along with a Virtual Console release of Earthbound.

Oddity doesn’t have a release date yet. The trailer says that the game will be released when it’s ready. But if you’re a Mother fan who’s been waiting too long, Oddity is shaping up to be a worthy spiritual successor.
