Gladiolus callianthus - Acidanthera 'Murielae'
Abyssinian gladiolus
Type/Hardiness Bulbous, perennial, Half hardy
Flowering period Late summer - Autumn
Height 18-36in/0.5-1m
Light preference Full sun
Soil preference Any, moist but well-drained
Sowing time/depth Spring, 0.2in/5mm
So much daintier than most other gladiolus, and with a deliciously spicy scent too! The flowers are funnel-shaped, white with a purple blotch at their centre, rising above light-green, sword-shaped leaves. Highly recommended.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow seeds at 13C/55F in good quality, slightly gritty compost, covering with 5mm compost or fine vermiculite. Keep pots in a sheltered spot outside after all danger of frost, bringing them back indoors at the end of the year and overwinter without watering until the spring. After two years of this treatment corms will be large enough to produce blooms and can be planted in the ground, 4-6 in/10-15 cm deep, but they should be lifted and stored indoors (or bring in pots or planters, kept dry) in all but the very mildest areas.
