Princeton Gold American Holly. Various sightings of yellow/gold berried forms of Ilex opaca are always being found by observant plant folks. Several have been spotted in the wild in our area. This is a selection made by Princeton Nurseries of NJ for its good golden yellow fruit color and appealing growth habit and dark green leaf color. As with most American hollies, they are most handsome when grown in full sun, which keeps them more compact. But they do amazingly well in a fair amount of shade. Remember, they are dioecious, so a male pollinator is needed for good berry set. As a rule, a male plant does not have to be close by, as bees can carry pollen for quite some distance. If you see any other American hollies in your vicinity with berries, there is a male somewhere in the neighborhood. We do sell a male pollinator, 'Adonis', which was released by the U.S. National Arboretum, and even though it doesn't have Ilex opaca in its parentage, it will pollinate many selections.
