Black and White Daylilies

So there are lots of white daylilies, and not so many black ones.  I read a newspaper article about daylilies this summer, and it stated there were no white daylilies.  Well, I beg to differ.  There are so many good white daylilies that are quite popular.   Here are a few of mine.  They are planted together in the same flower bed, along with white and black iris, black violas and a few other white flowers.   I will say that the black daylilies are generally a very dark purple or red tone, but they certainly are getting to black.   It also depends greatly on the weather, as blazing sun, will lighten most of the dark daylilies, bringing out the purple hues.

This is Brookwood Black Kitten , a very nice small dark daylily.  this photo is in the bright sun, and it is still holding the dark color.

Here is Admiral’s Braid, a white daylily, although it does have a yellow edge.

A great dark one, Caribbean Frank League.

The contrast, when they bloom together is great.  When the daylilies are settled in and begin to clump up, this flower bed, will be quite attractive.  This summer I did have a few days when the white daylilies would bloom with the dark ones.

this is Peggy Jeffcoat, a great double daylily, that blooms late, in fact it just finished blooming the beginning of August.  It does have days, though that it looks more pink than white.

A White Daylily does grow in my garden, how about Joan Senior, or Artic Snow for white.   This next one is Artic Snow.

Here is Joan Senior, this one is a very popular white daylily.

This is Premium Cream, sent to me as a bonus plant, from Marietta Gardens, (the Shooters), another great place to order daylilies.

Jungle Beauty, just had to get this one, so I drove 4 hours to Cottage Gardens in New York to get it. Not at all disappointed.

Night Wings is a good early bloomer.

Probably, the darkest daylily I have that is getting very close to black would be Smith Brothers, although I do have a couple of black ones that have not yet bloomed for me, hopefully next summer.

Now for a few more white daylilies,  another pic of Joan Senior.

Tuscawilla Tranquility, an extra early bloomer.

Marietta Snowflake.
