On the Sea and Coastal Ecologies:
Early Modern Pasts and Uncertain Futures

The culmination of our “Sea” events is a symposium occurring from May 19th and 20th 2022.

From Sea to Sky 2021-2022 is a continuation of the 2020-2021 season focusing on Sea. The aim of from Sea to Sky is to move into Sky (the third space being focused on in our series). This project continued to partner with the UCHRI and culminated in a Symposium at the UC Davis Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute at Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory on May 16-20, 2022.

Our 2020-22 session on Sea is proud to be partnering with the UCHRI in the development of the University of California Multi-Campus Faculty Working Group.

On the Sea and Coastal Ecologies: Early Modern Pasts and Uncertain Futures

The 2020-22 session on Sea featured events throughout the year. In addition to continuing the research for the Earth, Sea, Sky Research Group, this working group sought to explore interdisciplinary connections for medieval and early modern depictions of the sea. The working group was dedicated to exploring the interface between the environmental humanities and the visual, material, and textual archives of early modern maritime and coastal ecologies, with a special emphasis on the Pacific coast.

This working group was also in conversation with faculty from the UC Davis Coastal Science Institute at the Bodega Bay Marine Lab.
