DEX-P9 and DEQ-P9

Press release from CES 2001 introducing the new DEX-P9 and DEQ-P9

CES, Las Vegas, Nevada. January 06, 2001

Pioneer Electronics, the established leader in car electronics products, today introduced the next generation of high-performance car audio products: the Premier Reference Series single-CD player and processor. The Premier Reference Series lives up to the reputation of Pioneer's past Optical Digital Reference system (ODR) in its exceptional sound quality and high-end design. Comprised of the DEX-P9 single-CD Player and the DEQ-P9 Digital Signal Processor, the system processes music signals in the digital domain, free from noise and phase problems inherent in the analog realm. Music data information travels between components through digital fiber optic cables, impervious to noise caused by components in the car such as alternators, high current cables and computers.

"Enthusiasts will want this. Competitors will need it. The new Premier Reference Series CD player and processor will integrate all the features found in the ODR system without its high price," said Keith Burnett, vice president of marketing, Pioneer Car Electronics Division. The DEX-P9 single-CD player is versatile enough to be used alone or with the DEQ-P9 processor. The DEX-P9 boasts a 24-bit digital to analog converter (DAC) for exceptional sound quality and high-resolution conversion capability. Each pre-amp output (low/mid/high) will feature separate 24-bit DACs and high volt outputs (5 volts) for clean signal transfer to other components.

The cosmetic design of the DEX-P9 resembles the ODR RS-D2 single-CD player with the same family appearance. It uses minimal keys for a less cluttered look and has a titanium gray finish with a large display area as well as a motorized, detachable faceplate and a new rotary knob. The unit utilizes the brightness and open architecture of the Organic EL technology on a 256 x 64 display screen. The Organic EL display will clearly communicate the DEX-P9's multitude of features, including:

single-CD text information;
multi-CD text information;
disc title memory;
equalizer and crossover network settings (when connected to the DEQ-P9); and
XM-Ready Satellite Radio.

The DEQ-P9 processor will be sold as an optional component to complement the DEX-P9 CD player. The DEQ-P9 processor is an outboard 1/3-octave, 31-band equalizer with a variable crossover network. It features independent left and right equalizers for precise fine-tuning capability. Its built-in digital network adjusts crossover points and slopes to each of its outputs (subwoofer, low, mid and high). In addition, the unit will include time alignment capability from 0-160 inches to improve center image, increase stage height and obtain better depth.

RCA outputs of the DEQ-P9 also feature 24-bit DACs for the low, mid and high pre-amp outputs, 1-bit DAC for the subwoofer outputs, dual pulse with modulation (PWM) power supply and hi-volt (5 volts each) outputs. Pioneer Corporation is a leader in optical disc technology and a preeminent manufacturer of high-performance audio, video and computer equipment for the home, car and industrial markets. Its Vision 2005 business plan focuses on four core business domains including DVD, display technologies, Digital Network Entertainment and components. Founded in 1938 in Tokyo, Pioneer Corporation employs more than 29,000 people worldwide. The Company's annual revenue is in excess of $5.8 billion (for the year ended March 31, 2000, calculated at the rate of Y106=U.S.$1.00.) Its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PIO. Pioneer's U.S. headquarters is located in Long Beach, California.
