Details Market cross. Granite cross incorporating small carved plaque at apex and inscribed narrow slabs as arms mounted on square tooled granite plinth. The shaft is rectangular in section and the head is of a peculiar formation, having a band running in a line with the transverse limbs of the cross, and bearing the motto 'Virtute et Opera' (a motto of the Duke of Fife, which can be translated as 'By virtue and industry') above which on both sides of the cross, in a recessed panel, are the arms of the town. There are also two large inscribed slate plaques mounted in the north and south faces of the plinth, which has stepped and harled base. Cross and plinth mounted on circular crenellated platform approached by flight of steps. The inscription states that it was rebuilt in 1783, but the original date of the cross fragments not known.
