Plants shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3-4. Inflorescences usually small and numerous, of panicle- or umbel-like cymes. Calyces bell- or cup-shaped, truncate of 2-5-lobed; corolla tubes shortly cylindrical; limbs spreading, 4(-5)-lobed; stamens 4, usually included; ovaries 2-celled, with 2 ovules per cell; styles terminal, shortly bifid. Fruits small, globose to ovoid drupes; stones 4-celled.
Premna includes about 200 species which are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World.
