Plants herbs. Leaves opposite on ower portion of stems, usually alternate on upper portions. Inflorescences terminal or axillary racemes, or flowers solitary in the lef axils. Flowers bisexail, more or less bilaterally symmetric; calyces with 4(-5), often unequal lobes; corollas united, with short tubes; limbs with 4, somewhat unequal, lobes; stamens 2, exserted; ovaries superior, 2-celled, with numerous ovules; styles filiform, persistent; stigmas club-shaped. Fruits loculicidal capsules, sometimes also septicidal, more or less flattened at right angles to the septum; seeds usually numerous.
Veronica is a genus of about 180 species. It is best represented in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere but extends south in some tropical highlands in addition to including some widespread weeds.
