Beaver Alum Greta Espinoza Called Up to Mexican National Team

TOLUCA, Mexico - Oregon State alumna Greta Espinoza has been called up to the Mexico national team, technical director Mónica Vergara announced Wednesday. Espinoza, one of six players from the Tigres Femenil club, be joining the team for the next two matches of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) Women's Championship Qualifier.

The Mexico national team will compete against Surinam and Antigua & Barbuda on Feb. 17 and 20, respectively.  The Concacaf Women's Qualifier will decide the qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. 

Espinoza is no stranger to Mexico's national team, having been called up to their ranks in the past. The Tijuana, Mexico native earned a gold medal with the Mexican national team at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Columbia and joined the Mexican national team for a friendly match with Sweden on July 8, 2017. The defender played for Mexico at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. She has also made appearances on the Mexico U20 team (2014) and U17 team (2012). 

Espinoza competed for the Beavers from 2015 to 2017, starting all 39 games she appeared in and logging 3613 minutes on the pitch. She led the Beavers in minutes played during the 2016 season, clocking 1833, and recorded a season high of 110 minutes on two occasions: against Cal State Northridge (Aug. 21, 2016) and North Texas (Sept. 2, 2016). She scored her sole collegiate goal in the Beavers' clash with USC on Sept. 26, 2015. After closing out her collegiate career at Oregon State, Espinoza headed to Spain to join the Spanish club Levante UD from 2017 to 2018. Presently, Espinoza plays for Tigres Femenil, based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
