In this edition of the Spotlight, A. Hatzopoulos S.A. presents its range of flexible packaging solutions set to enable carbon reduction; announces a handbook and white paper designed to guide flexible film manufacturers towards sustainability; and invites our readers to its interpack stand.

Focused on the vision of a better future for our planet, A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. innovates for the development of innovative packaging solutions that will define the future of flexible packaging. By replacing traditional film structures with X-CYCLETM and X-LOOP films, the company aims to assist its customers to achieve their packaging sustainability targets. These solutions can be applied to various existing packaging lines and formats and are suitable for packaging of a broad range of consumer goods, enabling materials’ Circularity & Carbon Footprint Reduction.

Packaging Design for Recycling

X-CYCLETM is the company’s complete recyclable packaging range consisting of three main categories: X-CYCLE PP, X-CYCLE PE, and X-CYCLE POLY. Following several years of R&D team research on flexible packaging design for recycling, the specific target for the development of this range was to convert conventional formulations into their recyclable equivalents, whilst simultaneously preserving the protective properties and functionality of the original traditional materials.

Complementing the sustainability benefits already offered by flexibles compared to other packaging formats, the internationally award-winning X-CYCLE films ensure full compatibility with the recycling infrastructure where available, in accordance with the relevant industry guidelines. The recyclability of the basic versions of the X-CYCLE packaging films has been validated and certified by independent bodies, such as Cyclos-HTP, Interseroh, and OPRL.

At the same time, these mono-material and all-polyolefin film formulations provide high-barrier properties and excellent performance, validated by leading packaging machine manufacturers, to meet the diversified needs and packaging requirements of the company’s customers internationally. In partnership with its partners, the company has developed and brought to the European market numerous solutions to pack branded products in new recyclable packaging based on the X-CYCLE concept.

New X-LOOP Packaging Range – Closing the Loop on Flexible Packaging

X-LOOP is the latest A. HATZOPOULOS S.A. packaging line to be introduced to the market. The X-LOOP packaging range incorporates circular / post-consumer recycled plastic films (PCR) and bio-circular plastics; it is ISCC-PLUS certified and food-contact safe, in compliance with all Regulations on plastic materials that come in contact with food.

These films do not differentiate from virgin ones. Their mechanical, physical, and chemical properties are maintained, as is their performance on the converting and packaging lines. The laminated structures reach adjustable rates of circular / bio-circular content based on the amount of ISCC-certified material used in their production, according to the mass balance approach applied.

The packaging solutions based on the X-LOOP concept result in overall Lower Carbon Footprint relative to virgin / fossil-based plastics, while, at the same time, the barrier properties, packaging functionality, and aesthetics of the original films remain the same.
