In 2001 was the first edition of Miss Earth pageant. Miss Earth is an international environmental-themed pageant competition promoting environmental awareness, conservation and social responsibility. The pageant was held on October 28, 2001 at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City. There were 42 delegates who competed for the first edition.

Catharina Svensson of Copenhagen, Denmark was crowned the very first Miss Earth. She was a 19-year-old third year law student and a part-time model when she was crowned Miss Earth 2001. She was married to Jan Brink, a seven-time Swedish dressage champion. Catharina gave birth to her daughter in 2010. She currently resides in Sweden.
