Part of pathogen screening sampling after nearly 30 Bog, Wood, and Spotted Turtles were found dead at the site. on May 8, 2013:1 live male Bog Turtle and 2 shells collected (both female). Also found 5 live (2 dead) C. guttata including 1 live yearling, and 1 live G. insculpta. 1 dead C. serpentina also found.
I hope this is communicated to others doing surveys. Protocol is hopefully being followed but this justifies the need and highlights the severity that could result if folks dont take the time to decontaminate, or just stay out of wetlands. What a tragedy.
I know, absolutely terrible. This pathogen stuff is pretty scary (if that's what it is - it smelled like a potential Ranavirus outbreak). We will be putting a recommended decontamination protocol up on the site soon that is relatively easy for people to follow. I hope they do. Decon is always important between sites, particularly since we have all of these scary herp pathogens out there: Ranavirus, Chytrid, Fungal Dermatitis that is killing critters.
