Otoplasty

Lop ear otoplastyOtoplasty is procedure that resphapes the ears. Ear deformities, such as a prominent ear, are considered normal variants of ear anatomy, with up to 5% of the population having some type of abnormality. In most cases these variations in ear anatomy are familial and a result of an underdeveloped antihelical fold or an excess of ear cartilage (a deep conchal bowl).

Each ear is unique in its presentation and there is no single operation that encompasses all the needs of all ear abnormalities.  Photographs and physical examination is used to determine the individual need of the patient and the correct operation is chosen.  Incisions are made behind the ear so that only careful inspection would reveal the evidence of surgery.  Depending on the extent of surgery, and the tolerance of the patient, this procedure can be done under local anesthetic.

A compressive head dressing is placed on the patient’s ears that will remain in place until the first post operative visit to assist in healing. After this is removed, patients can often return to their normal activities, typically 2 weeks following surgery.
