Most emeralds are medium-sized dragonflies which are named for the brilliant green eyes of the adults. Most have a metallic sheen to the thorax, and some show a glittering bronze sheen on their wings in flight. Emeralds hunt for prey by cruising near vegetation, especially in treed areas or near forest openings. They can sometimes be seen hanging from vegetation with their bodies held on a diagonal.
