Eugene Levy has made a career out of making people laugh — but when it came to being a parent, it wasn't all Schitt's and giggles.

The Canadian actor married screenwriter and producer Deborah Divine in 1977. The couple went on to have two children, Dan and Sarah, whom they raised in Toronto away from a "show-bizzy kind of environment," Eugene told PEOPLE in 2019. And, according to Eugene, he was a strict parent to his son and daughter.

"The thing was for us, if you crossed the line, there was going to be some sort of punishment," he said of his parenting philosophy. "It's the way I was brought up, and it's the way I brought up my kids."

He continued, "It worked! Because honestly we've never had a problem with our kids. It was fun as they got older because then they'd start making us laugh."

Making people laugh became a family affair when Eugene, Dan and Sarah starred together on the beloved comedy series Schitt's Creek from 2015 to 2020. Eugene and Dan played father and son Johnny and David Rose on the show, while Sarah portrayed Twyla Sands, the local waitress.

"As a dad, getting to work on camera for six years with both my kids, Daniel and Sarah, I had such a joy. I love you both and could not be prouder," Eugene said in his Emmy Award acceptance speech in 2020.

From their childhood to their personal accomplishments, here's everything to know about Eugene Levy's kids, Dan and Sarah Levy.

Eugene and Deborah welcomed their first child, Daniel Joseph, on Aug. 9, 1983, in Toronto. Despite having a legendary comedic actor for a father, Dan had a rather "normal" upbringing in Canada.

"He made me do my homework. He grounded me," Dan told PEOPLE in 2019.

As he grew up, it became clear that Dan shared more than just strong brows and a solid head of hair with his famous father — he also inherited Eugene's comedic ability.

"There were more times that Daniel had us laughing than I ever had anybody laughing," Eugene told PEOPLE.

Dan eventually followed in his father's footsteps and began his on-camera career in 2006 hosting MTV's After Show for The Hills. In February 2023, Dan spoke about the homophobia he faced at the beginning of his career while he worked for MTV, explaining he "didn't feel particularly free" to be an out gay man working on the show.

"It was kind of like, 'Conform to the culture of the workplace or sit it out.' But it was never like, 'Let's pause what we're doing to listen to you,' " he recalled on the Phone a Friend with Jessi Cruickshank podcast.

After a few minor acting roles in films, including Cyberstalker and Admission, Dan teamed up with his dad to form the production company Not a Real Company Productions. They produced Schitt's Creek, which follows an ultra-wealthy family that loses all their money and is forced to move to a rugged small town, Schitt's Creek.

The fan-favorite series ran for six seasons. Dan not only starred on Schitt's Creek, but also wrote and directed the show — and won Emmys across all three categories in 2020 for his work. Since the show ended, Eugene and Dan have continued to work side by side — including appearing together on Saturday Night Live and publishing a book called Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: The Story of Schitt's Creek in 2021.

And though Dan is an accomplished actor and comedian in his own right — he appeared in Happiest Season, hosted The Great Canadian Baking Show, and joined Netflix's Sex Education in season 4 he still looks up to his father and Eugene's five-decade career.

"Watching him work has been one of the great master classes for me in how to do it right," the Good Grief director shared with PEOPLE. "He's handled his career with such grace and poise and respect and really informed how I want to continue running my professional career."

Eugene became a father of two — and Dan became a big brother — when daughter Sarah was born on Sept. 10, 1986, in Toronto. And though she was raised "with all options open to them of what they wanted to do," as Eugene told PEOPLE in 2019, she pursued a career as an actress.

Sarah's first on-screen appearance was alongside Eugene in 2005's Cheaper by the Dozen 2. Her most notable role, though, is Café Tropical waitress Twyla on Schitt's Creek. Working with her father and brother on the series meant that there were "lots of conversations over the years around the dinner table" about the show, Sarah shared.

Since the show concluded in April 2020, Sarah has kept busy off-screen. On Oct. 16, 2021, she married law student Graham Outerbridge — with big brother Dan serving as DJ and her parents performing a surprise duet of the Emmylou Harris song "Love and Happiness" at the reception.

"It just brought the house down. My mom, who doesn't like the spotlight, absolutely nailed it," Dan shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. "It was so nice."

In July 2022, Sarah and Outerbridge welcomed a son, James Eugene. Sarah announced his arrival on Instagram. "He decided to make an early entrance but we are so glad sweet James Eugene Outerbridge is in the world," she wrote.

James arrived three weeks before his due date. Sarah shared in an interview with Babe by HATCH that she started experiencing contractions two days before his birth and even made an appointment with her doctor, who told her there "were no signs of labor, no dilation, nothing felt alarming at all."

However, when the contractions progressed, she asked her husband to text the doctor again. "Luckily we were a two-minute drive from the hospital because I was already four centimeters dilated," she revealed. "This was at 12:45 a.m., and he was born at 10:30 a.m. the next morning. Labor and delivery was super smooth — and there he was and he was perfect."

And further proving how tight-knit the family is, baby James' middle name is a nod to his grandfather Eugene, who was "incredibly touched by the gesture," Sarah confirmed in the same interview.

"Honestly, I could not imagine any other middle name for James," she said, adding that her family has a tradition of giving their children middle names in honor of other members. "It was just a nice way to honor my dad."

In March 2024, Sarah spoke at Eugene's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

"My 37-year-old self stands here in awe of my dad and his accomplishments throughout his 50-plus year career. I'm continuously amazed by his attention to detail, his passion and his unwavering dedication to his craft," she said, adding, "We love you so much, and we can't wait for people to walk all over you."
