Deepika Padukone isn’t just a globally acclaimed actress and a style icon — she’s also a home design connoisseur!

While speaking exclusively with PEOPLE about her new Pottery Barn line that launched on Thursday night, the Fighter star opened up about how each curated piece in the collection is a reflection of her Indian culture and her personal style.

“I like colors that are tone-on-tone neutral and a lot of pastels, but it also has to feel luxurious,” Padukone tells PEOPLE. “And when I say luxurious, I don't necessarily mean expensive, but in terms of quality. For me, luxury is how it makes you feel.”

The collection features an array of home products set in a neutral color palette. The U.S. line offers bedding, embroidered pillows, rugs and decor, while the dinnerware and serveware assortments are available exclusively in India, the Middle East and the Philippines.

One of her favorite pieces in the line “would be the tiny bowls, which in India we call Katori,” the Om Shanti Om alum shares. “The small-sized bowls that we use are quite unique to us in terms of our culture and the way we eat. I think the Indian community in particular is going to be excited about that.”

She adds that it was “really special” for Pottery Barn to understand the importance of the bowls and incorporate them in the India, Middle East and Philippines assortments.

For the 82-East co-founder, the products in this line truly are an “extension” of her home, she says. She describes her home base in India as “soft on the eyes” mixed with “little pockets of drama.”

She continues, “I don't think I can go with just one route or one particular aesthetic. So if a piece of furniture is modern, then I have to find something around it to make it less modern. I like mixing things up, so it's modern, mixed with classic.”

Including Indian artwork in her home is essential for Padukone, as well as decor that is inspired by her travels.

“I think if I had to sum up my style today, it would really be a mix of different things that I've seen from around the world,” she adds.

On whether any of the iconic films she’s starred in over the course of her career have inspired her design style, Padukone says, “I'm sure the film sets that we spend so much of our time on have an influence in the way that I do up my spaces.”

She references director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films — like Padmaavat or Bajirao Mastani which she starred in, to name a few — most likely played a role in the “pockets of drama” in her house.

Padukone also recalls a funny memory of the director being influenced by her home’s style.

“I remember when Sanjay Leela Bhansali came to my house for the first time. I had these two Raja Ravi Varma prints,” she shares, referring to the famous Indian painter. “And a couple of months later when we were filming, he had a similar thing on his set. I remember him telling me, ‘You remember these. I saw them at your house on the way out.’ ”

Bringing her design aesthetic and influences from her travels and film sets to life with Pottery Barn was a “really exciting” process, Padukone notes.

“Them just understanding who I am, what my likes are, what my dislikes are,” made the inception of the line a truly “collaborative” journey, she says.

“We have collaborated in this process with every single piece going back and forth, feedback, what's working, what's not working,” she adds. “So really understanding my likes and dislikes, and taking that into the collection, whether it was the bed covers, the cushions, the dinnerware, the photo frames, the candles, etc. The process of collaborating and creating was really exciting.”
