Her spokesperson Martin Frostberg confirmed her death, according to the Associated Press. Andersson was hospitalized in France after suffering a stroke in 2009. The actress starred in 13 films by the legendary Bergman, including 1966’s psychological drama Persona for which she won best actress at the 4th Guldbagge Awards (the Swedish equivalent of the Academy Awards). Her performance as Alma earned worldwide critical acclaim, as well as a 1968 BAFTA nomination for best actress. Bibi Andersson. Prior to Persona, Andersson made a name for herself with classic films like Wild Strawberries (1957) and The Seventh Seal (1957). Throughout the course of her two-decade-long career, Andersson appeared in more than 50 films. In 1990, the Swedish actress added theater director to he resume, directing several plays for the Sweden’s national stage, Dramaten. “Her achievements in Swedish cinema cannot be overrated,” the Swedish Film Institute’s CEO, Anna Serner, said in a statement obtained by the AP. Andersson “will be forever remembered as one of Sweden’s truly great actors,” she added. She is survived by her daughter, Jenny, and her third husband, Gabriel Mora Baeza.
