The latest single from Aromanticism

After the high-stakes acrobatics of “Quarrel” and the delicate swell of “Doomed,” the latest track off Moses Sumney’s debut album Aromanticism lands like a moment of respite. Both those songs stirred up tension, but “Indulge Me” clears space for the hearty strum of an acoustic guitar, played here as if around a campfire banishing all the ghosts that have been flitting through his head.

Though “Indulge Me” sounds lonelier than the previous offerings, it begins with a moment of peace: “All my old lovers have found others,” Sumney sings, his voice gentle over a soothing chord progression. He is alone but unbothered, overseeing the passage of his old flames to their new loves, enjoying the pocket of solitude that’s formed around him. “I don’t trouble nobody/Nobody troubles my body,” he concludes. “Indulge Me” is the 10th track of the album’s 11, and it sounds like a necessary beat of reconciliation after the more tormented narratives that precede it. Here, at last, Sumney’s voice lilts toward the light.
