Juniperus horizontalis “Blue Chip Creeping Juniper” is a medium green to steel-blue colored evergreen trailing shrub. Best used as a ground cover – especially for erosion control. This brilliant greenish-blue evergreen stands at only about 6”-12”, but trails up to 8’-10’ from the crown of the plant. If you’re in search of a year-round burst of color, Blue Chip Creeping Juniper should be high on your list!

Is low maintenance on your list of priorities when searching for your next shrub addition? This is a fantastic contender! Featuring deer resistant foliage, this shrub is also drought tolerant. With minimal needs to keep the foliage looking great year-round, what does this shrub require? Pruning as needed to keep its trailing growth habit in check within its designated home. You get to call the shots when it comes to pruning and can choose to guide each branch to grow in the design you wish to have within your landscape.

Blue Chip Creeping Juniper Care

With its low maintenance habits, what should you do to keep your shrub happy? When planting, ensure the crown is level with the ground and the roots spread out in a hole twice the size of the crown. Use an equal mix of native soil and sand to plant this shrub to allow proper drainage. Small pebbles are also great to add to the bottom of the hole.

What pH should the soil be? The Blue Chip Creeping Juniper is versatile to many pH conditions and can be planted in either acidic, neutral or alkaline soil. As long as the soil provides proper drainage, your shrub will be quite happy!

To fertilize while it is first becoming established, simply add a thin layer of aged compost on top of the roots about 2”-3” away from the base of the shrub’s trunk.

Where should you plant this beautiful evergreen? Full sun is best! Ensure your shrub is receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Its drought tolerance allows the plant to successfully withhold from regular watering, but how often should it be watered? Within the first several weeks of planting, the soil should be kept relatively moist. After establishing within its home, supplemental watering should be done when there is an excessive drought. If you have not received any substantial rain within 2-3 weeks, water the base of the shrub without submerging its roots.

The absolute beauty of this evergreen shrub is its minimal maintenance. Within that maintenance, you’ll find yourself needing to occasionally prune or shape to your liking. So what does the pruning process look like? Whether your shrub is planted along a hillside, within a large groundcover bed or in any other location, pruning will only need to be done to your specifications. If one or more branches are trailing over a wall or border, you can simply redirect the branch or prune the end of it. Again, the pruning is 100% up to you. If you do not prefer to prune, you can redirect the branches by simply moving them a different direction or by lightly tying them to a structure that you want covered by the Blue Chip Creeping Juniper.

Blue Chip Creeping Juniper Plant Spacing

Because of its trailing habit it is recommended to space each plant approximately 5-6 feet, center on center, when planted in mass planting. This will allow ample space for each shrub to spread successfully without the need to fight for nutrients.

If you are planting a single Blue Chip Creeping Juniper, keep in mind how far the branches may spread out to. Keep other varieties of plants and trees 8’-10’ away from this shrub so you do not have plants competing for growing space.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
