Information
Tree up to 15 m high; bark grey or brown, reticulately or longitudinally fissured, flaking off; branchlets slender, often drooping. Leaves usually (1–)3-foliolate in Somalia (elsewhere up to 13-foliolate); rhachis 5–16(–22) cm long, glabrous or almost so; leaflets lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, 2–11 x 1.7–6 cm, base cuneate or sometimes truncate in terminal leaflets, apex acuminate to obtuse, in Somalia glabrous except for tufts of hairs in axils of main nerves beneath; venation reticulate and prominent beneath. Flowers produced with the leaves, in glabrous or sparsely pubescent spike-like racemes or little-branched panicles; pedicels 0.5–4 mm long, usually with minute stellate hairs; petals 2.5–4.5 mm long, ± hooded, yellowish. Drupes oblong-ellipsoid, 8–12 x 6–8 mm, red.

Kokwaro in Kew Bull. 34: 751 (1980) recognized four varieties within L. schweinfurthii and with this classification the Somali plants with their relatively broad leaflets would belong to var. stuhlmannii (Engl.) Kokwaro. However, I agree with Gilbert in Fl. Eth. 3: 518 (1990) that the distinction between var. stuhlmannii and var. schweinfurthii is very unclear and I therefore prefer not to use this varietal name. The Somali populations of L. schweinfurthii seem to be completely devoid of stellate hairs.
