Prevention and Control

Public Awareness
Ipomoea obscura is a declared invasive weed in Hawaii (USA) and in the Caledonian Islands (Useful Tropical Plants, 2017). Some internet sites that sell seeds of I. obscura have notifications warning buyers about the invasiveness of some of the Ipomoea species, with restrictions on the sale to certain regions.
Control
Cultural Control and Sanitary Measures
Some countries have restrictions on the import of foreign Ipomoea species as some are recognized as invasive elsewhere (Dave’s Garden, 2017).
Physical/Mechanical Control
Although manual removal by hand is recommended, this would increase the cost of crop production (Suwanketnikom and Julakasewee, 2004; Tyagi et al., 2017).
Biological Control
Xanthomonas campestris pv. obscurae has been proposed as a biological control agent for I. obscura (Chand and Singh, 1994).
Chemical Control
Due to the variable regulations around (de-)registration of pesticides, we are for the moment not including any specific chemical control recommendations. For further information, we recommend you visit the following resources:
