The Asian Brown Cloud is a layer or air pollution that covers a huge part of South Asia. It is a 2 mile long pollution cloud that mainly covers the Indian Ocean, India, and Pakistan. It is mainly formed from airborne particles and pollutants from combustion. But also consists of black carbon, fly ash, soil dust particles, and nitrogen dioxide. This cloud covers so many people that have to live in it. The health effects are terrible for the people. The cloud has led to 2 million deaths in South Asia. By 2020, It is predicted that there will be 8 million deaths related to the cloud. It also leads to heart disease to people especially to infants and the elderly.
The cloud not only causes health problems to the people but is affecting the precipitation that falls in the area as well as affecting the climate. It makes the surface temperature colder because it reduces the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface. This reduces the amount of water evaporated which causes there to be less rain. With the less rain this decreases the amount of crops produced. This is hurting the economy because agriculture is such a huge part of the economy in India. This problem has been around for years, From 1985-1998 the Indian rice output was decreased drastically. The rice decreased 6.2 million metric tons. That would have been enough to feed 72 million people.
