Global description
Cinnamomum verum is a woody tree, upright, measuring up to 15 m high. The bark is smooth and perfumed of color brown black. The young stems are reddish or grayish with white spots. The leaves are simple, opposite or sub-opposite, carried by a petiole from 1 to 3 cm. The young ones are reddish or pink. The blade is coriaceous and shining on the upper face, of oval to oval-lanceolate shape, from 10 to 15 cm length and 4 to 8 cm broad, with pointed top and rounded base. The margin is entire. The central vein and two arched lateral veins are well marked. The secondary veins are reticulated. Both faces are glabrous. The inflorescence is a terminal or axillary panicle of 10 to 12 cm long, with white axes. The flowers are fragrant, whitish and silky-pubescent, formed by 3 outer and 3 inner tepals of 3 mm, 9 stamens arranged on 3 cycles and 3 staminodes. Ovary ovoid of 10 to 15 mm, surmounted by a style with flattened stigma. The fruit is an ellipsoid drupe from 10 to 15 mm long, of black color at maturity surrounded by a cup bearing the persistent tepals.

Mayotte: Cinnamomum verum is an exotic species, used in plantations for the exploitation of cinnamon and for reforestation. This species is now well naturalized in hygrophilous and mesophilous regions. It also grows on roadsides and in crops.

Cinnamomum verum is native to Sri Lanka.
Worldwide distribution
This species has been introduced in the islands of the Indian Ocean (Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion), India, Central America, tropical South America, the Caribbean, tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Local harmfulness
Mayotte: Cinnamomum verum is a fairly frequent weed in Mayotte, it is present in 8% of cultivated plots. It is found in fruit crops as well as in ylang and pineapple plantations. It is mainly present in the northern zone of the island. In natural and secondarized environments, it is a species considered invasive.

Food: The leaves and bark of Cinnamomum verum are aromatic: it is the cinnamon.
Medicinal: The infusion of leaves is febrifuge (against fever) and diuretic. The essential oil contains many compounds, allowing to treat asthma, bronchitis and diarrhea.
