    Global description

Cinnamomum verum is a woody tree, upright, measuring up to 15 m high. The bark is smooth and perfumed of color brown black. The young stems are reddish or grayish with white spots. The leaves are simple, opposite or sub-opposite, carried by a petiole from 1 to 3 cm. The young ones are reddish or pink. The blade is coriaceous and shining on the upper face, of oval to oval-lanceolate shape, from 10 to 15 cm length and 4 to 8 cm broad, with pointed top and rounded base. The margin is entire. The central vein and two arched lateral veins are well marked. The secondary veins are reticulated. Both faces are glabrous. The inflorescence is a terminal or axillary panicle of 10 to 12 cm long, with white axes. The flowers are fragrant, whitish and silky-pubescent, formed by 3 outer and 3 inner tepals of 3 mm, 9 stamens arranged on 3 cycles and 3 staminodes. Ovary ovoid of 10 to 15 mm, surmounted by a style with flattened stigma. The fruit is an ellipsoid drupe from 10 to 15 mm long, of black color at maturity surrounded by a cup bearing the persistent tepals.
