The native range of this species is Trinidad to S. Tropical America. It is a tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is has environmental uses and social uses, as animal food, a poison, a medicine and invertebrate food and for fuel and food.

Distribution
Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Guiana Shield, Caribbean, Orinoquia, Pacific. Elevation range: 0–900 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Amazonas, Antioquia, Bolívar, Caldas, Caquetá, Casanare, Guainía, Guaviare, Huila, Magdalena, Meta, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, San Andrés y Providencia, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Vaupés.
