Prophetic medicine

INTRODUCTION
 Prophetic medicine ('Al-Tibb al-
nabawī, ‫النبوي‬ ‫)الطب‬ refers to the actions
and words (hadith) specifically of
the prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) with
regards to sickness, treatment and
hygiene.
 Prophetic Medicine has been described
as advice by the Prophet (pbuh) to His
followers with an objective to maintain
health and well-being for their body and
soul equally

CLASSIFICATION
Al-Suyuti (born 849AH) divides
Prophetic
medicine into three classes:
 Preventative Prophetic medicine
 Traditional Prophetic medicine
 Spiritual Prophetic medicine

Preventative Prophetic
medicine
Preventive measures taught in hadith
include:
 quarantine for epidemics
 forbidding urination in stagnant water
 use of tooth stick
 precautions in the house at night
 fire & pests

 leaving a country because of its water
and climate
 marriage and mental health,
 dietary control to avoid excesses,
 cleanliness and avoiding filth.
 Recitation of the Qur’an has beneficial
physiological effects.

Moderation in Eating
The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised
his nation with moderation when he said:
“The son of Adam does not fill a vessel
worse than his stomach. A few mouthfuls
are sufficient for him in order to keep his
back straight. And if he must fill his
stomach; then one third for his food, one
third for his drink and one third for his
air.” [At-Tirmidhi]

To always eat to ones fill:
 leads to sicknesses of the body and
soul.
 is a hindrance to ones worship of Allah
and obedience to Him
 leads to laziness and sleep

excessive eating – is disliked because:
 It restricts the breathing and leads to other
ailments such as:
 High blood pressure
 Diabetes
 Gout
 Arteriosclerosis (Hardening of the arteries)
 Strokes and heart attacks

Miswak
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: ‘Three things
are amongst the practices of the Ambiyaa
— , application of perfume, Miswaak and
marriage'." AHMAD AND TIRMIZI

Benefits of Miswak
 The greatest benefit of using miswaak is
gaining the pleasure of Allah.
 The reward of Salaah (Prayers) is
multiplied 70 times if Miswaak was used
before it.
 Strengthens the gums and prevents tooth
decay.
 Creates a fragrance in the mouth.
 Eliminates bad odors and improves the
sense of taste.
 Sharpens the memory.

 Is a cure for headaches.
 Creates luster (noor) on the face of the one
who continually uses it.
 Causes the teeth to glow.
 Strengthens the eyesight.
 Assists in digestion.
 Clears the voice.

Dates
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: “Indeed
in
dates there is a cure”. Muslim(14/3)

Allah's Messenger (‫ﷺ‬ ) Said: “A family
which
has dates will not be hungry.” –Sahih

 In Arabic it is called ‫البركة‬ ‫ة‬‫ب‬‫ح‬ ḥabbat al-
barakah 'the seed of blessing‘.
 Black cumin is mentioned in the book of
Isaih in the Old Testament (Isaiah 28:25)
 Black cumin is also used in Ayurvedic
medicine

Hijama (Cupping)
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: "If there
was
something excellent to be used as a
remedy
then it is cupping (hijama).“ Sunan ibn
Maajah:3476

What is Cupping
Cupping is a therapeutic process for
removing,
'unclean blood' from the body. Cupping is
the
process of applying cups to various points
on the
body by removing the air inside the cups to
form
a vacuum. The blood comes out from the
incisions and is collected in a cup from
where it
is removed.

Benefits of Hijama
 It removes toxins and other waste material from the
blood.
 It creates a negative pressure in the applied area
thus relieving pain & pressure.
 It forces body to increase its blood circulation &
boost the immune system.
 It can help those people who are under some
magic spell or who are under the influence of some
evil beings.
 Hijama or cupping is a safe, non-invasive and
economical way of curing and preventing many
diseases.

Olives
OLIVE / ZAITOON (Blessed Tree)
Prophet
Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: “Eat the oil and
use it
on your hair and skin, for it comes from
a
blessed tree.” Tirmidhi:1775

Benefits of Olives
 Prevents heart diseases
 Protects against cancer
 Improves brain function
 Protects against depression:
 It heals the sinus and fistula very quickly
 Olive oil lowers the levels of total blood
cholesterol
 No remedy equates the benefits of olive oil
in hyper acidity and gas troubles.

 The decoction of olive leaves in water is
effective against mouth and lips ulcers and
allergic dermatitis.
 The massage of olive oil over the body
tones up the muscles and organs, it
relieves muscular pains
 Help against wrinkles and delaying the
effects of old age

FIG Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: "If I
could
say that a fruit was sent down from
Heaven (to
earth), I would say it is figs, because the
Heaven's fruit has no stones. Eat it, as it
cures
hemorrhoids and it is useful for treating
gout
(osteo-arthritis).” Hadith

Benefits of Fig
 For treatment of chronic hemorrhoids

 A mixture of figs and honey is very
good for coughs.

 Content of Calcium and Potassium in figs
prevent bone thinning and helps to increase

 Figs are extremely nutritious, and over-all

 Figs contain Iron which enriches the blood,
and helps to produce it.
 Fiber present in figs is useful to flush out all
the harmful toxins from the body including

Loban
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said:
“Fumigate
your houses with Loban and Saatar.”
Baihaqui

Benefits of Loban
 It is an excellent repellent used to kill
mosquitoes and other harmful insects
from your house
 It is an incense product which is used as
fragrance.
 It is believed that its aroma is good for
mind relaxation.
 Loban is said to remove negative
energies from your home like anger,
depression, frustration and also grief.

Kohl (Surma)
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: “The best
of
your kohl is antimony (Surma), for it
improves
the eyesight and makes the hair
(eyelashes)
grow.” Sunan ibn Maajah:3497

Benefits of Kohl
 Kohl protects the health of the eyes
and gives strength and clarity of vision
 It cleanses the eyes of bad
substances.
 Kohl application at the time of sleeping
has more benefits, as it will cause
stillness from harmful movements

Sponging in Fever
Prophet Muhammed ()‫ﷺ‬ Said: "Fever is from
the heat of the Hell, so cool it with water.“
Sahih Bukhari:3262
Benefits
 Tepid sponging is a time honoured and well
known method of reducing the elevated
temperature.
 Tepid sponging is useful as an immediate but
transient measure in bringing down the
temperature.
