Eupomatia laurina - Bolwarra, Copper Laurel
.
Common name: Bolwarra, Copper Laurel
Family: Eupomatiaceae (Eupomatia)
Distribution: NSW, QLD, VIC, New Guinea
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Life form: Evergreen shrub/sub-shrub
Comments: Eupomatia has evolved a simple mechanism to avoid self-pollination - its flower blooms in two stages. On each plant, the female flower parts are exposed during the early part of the day. Then this part of the flower closes and the male parts (stamens) are extended. This time delay increases the likelihood that the beetle pollinator will collect pollen from one plant but will be on another plant by the time female parts are available again.
