Condylactis gigantea
The Condylactis anemone, scientifically known as Condylactis gigantea, is a captivating marine invertebrate that adds a burst of color and elegance to saltwater aquariums. With its vibrant hues and graceful tentacles, this anemone is a favorite among hobbyists.

The Condylactis anemone showcases a wide range of colors, including shades of purple, pink, orange, and red. Its base, or foot, is typically a deep red or brown color, providing a striking contrast to the vivid tentacles. The tentacles themselves are long, slender, and often have a translucent appearance, making them appear delicate and ethereal.
Growing up to 8 inches in diameter, the Condylactis anemone is a moderately sized species. Its unique feature is its tentacles, which have distinctive knobs or bulbs along their lengths. These bulbs contain specialized stinging cells called nematocysts, which the anemone uses to capture and immobilize its prey.

In the wild, Condylactis anemones are found in the Caribbean Sea and the Western Atlantic Ocean, where they attach themselves to rocks, coral reefs, or other stable surfaces. They rely on a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, which live within their tissues and provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis.

In a well-maintained aquarium, the Condylactis anemone can thrive with proper care. It requires moderate to high lighting levels to support its photosynthetic needs and should be placed in a tank with stable water parameters. While it primarily relies on photosynthesis, supplemental feeding is necessary to ensure its nutritional requirements are met.

This anemone's compatibility should be considered when selecting tankmates. It can be aggressive towards other sessile invertebrates or corals, so it is best kept in a species-only tank or with compatible, non-aggressive fish like clownfish or gobies. With its captivating colors and graceful presence, the Condylactis anemone is a stunning addition to any saltwater aquarium. Its ability to sway and extend its tentacles in response to water flow creates a mesmerizing display. However, it is important to handle and house this anemone with care, respecting its powerful stinging cells and providing it with a suitable environment to thrive.
