Chinese photovoltaics (PV) maker Yingli Green Energy Holding Co (NYSE:YGE) today said it has officially kicked off construction of a 20-MW solar farm in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

The PV plant, located in Shule county, is expected to generate up to 28 GWh of electricity per year, which is enough to power some 30% of the local households. Its output is estimated to offset 17,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The company’s unit Yingli Energy (Beijing) Co Ltd, which is in charge of the project, is expected to complete the facility in the second quarter of 2015. So far, Yingli has installed some 100 MW of solar capacity in Xinjiang, chairman and CEO, Liansheng Miao, noted.

Yingli Green had a total of 400 MW of solar projects in the construction phase in 2014, half of which it expects to complete within the first six months of 2015. In a separate statement yesterday, the firm announced it has successfully hooked to the grid a 10-MW solar farm in China’s Hebei province.
