Zodiac and Rowing Blazers Unveil the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT Collaboration

A second chance at life.
In the second installment of the collaboration between Zodiac and American apparel maker Rowing Blazers, the duo has introduced a more complicated timepiece – the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT. Retaining the striking and vibrant colors characteristic of Rowing Blazers, the latest release features quirky and noteworthy details that are sure to bring a smile to the faces of fans of Christmas movies.

Trading Places with Rowing Blazers

A young brand with a youthful founder, Rowing Blazers has achieved significant success and garnered a cult following in the realm of celebrities. This success is attributed to founder Jack Carlson’s immersion in the scholarly pursuit of discovering ancient cultures and artifacts. Leveraging his background, Carlson authored the book Rowing Blazers, depicting the traditional blazers worn by rowers in the past. This book paved the way for a friendship and collaboration with Ralph Lauren, ultimately laying the foundation for Carlson to launch his own fashion brand.

Interestingly, Mr. Carlson is also a fan of the 1980s, which serves as his inspiration for the latest collaboration with Zodiac. Referencing the Christmas movie Trading Places, the new World Time GMT incorporates an unconventional bezel marked with not 24 but 27 cities. Three additional cities originate from a dialogue in the movie when the main character tried to sell his watch, asserting it “tells time simultaneously in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and Gstaad.”

Notice the inclusion of M. Carlo, Rome, and Gstaad on the bezel

All six places mentioned in the movie have found their way onto the watch. London and Paris have long been part of world time watches, while Beverly Hills replaces the typical Los Angeles found on a cities ring. However, Monte Carlo, Rome, and Gstaad have been added to the bezel alongside the existing 24 cities, resulting in a distinctive total of 27 cities. This quirky addition is sure to bring a smile to fans of the movie, though its appeal might be considered niche rather than universal.

Other than the unique bright blue world-time bezel, characteristic of Rowing Blazers, the rest of the watch is akin to Zodiac’s earlier World Time GMT. This means it retains a wearable 40 mm case and features vintage-inspired hands and markers, drawing inspiration from a 1970s world time watch made by the brand. The incorporation of bold markers, along with details like the 24-hour ring, introduces visual complexity and depth to the dial, elevating its overall look and feel. This arguably justifies its price tag of USD 2,175, representing a roughly 20% increase from the previous World Time GMT – an understandable adjustment given the collaborative nature of the launch.

Now with a five-link bracelet, a change from the earlier three-link version of the World Time GMT

A movement by Zodiac’s sister company

In the earlier version of Zodiac’s World Time GMT, the movements were crafted by Soprod, but the latest iteration houses the STP 7-20. STP stands for Swiss Technology Production, a movement manufacturer that replicates traditional Swiss movements from ETA, similar to Sellita. Like Zodiac, STP is under the ownership of Fossil, making them sister companies.

The STP 7-20 is STP’s rendition of the ETA 2893-2, essentially an ETA 2892 with a GMT module. Consequently, the STP 7-20 boasts a running time of approximately 40 hours and features a GMT hand that can be adjusted independently in hourly increments. While both these attributes may reveal the age of the movement, they nonetheless indicate that the construction of the movement is tried and true.
