Wernoski Knocks in 5 for RMC Baseball vs. BC

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) had the game-winning RBI in the opener and drove in four in Game 2 as the Randolph-Macon baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader with Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Eagles tallied two in the first and one in the second before the Yellow Jackets responded in the third. Freshman Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) drew a one-out walk and scored on a double by senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
  • RMC would take the lead in the fifth. Quici, sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and Webb all scored on wild pitches as the Yellow Jackets took a 4-3 lead. Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) walked and came home on an error as RMC led 5-3.
  • BC put up single runs in the sixth and eighth to knot the score at 5-5.
  • The Yellow Jackets would win it in the bottom of the ninth. Quici reached on an error and Schmitt walked. With one away, Quici was forced out at third on a fielder's choice. Wernoski singled to left to drive in Schmitt with the game-winner.

  • Quici went 2 for 3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, and two runs.

  • Junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) earned the win to go 2-1. He pitched 1.1 innings with one hit, no runs, one walk and one strikeout.
How It Happened: Game 2
  • BC again scored two in the top of the first before RMC answered in the bottom of the frame. Quici, Schmitt and Webb had singles to load the bases. Harvey's sacrifice fly plated Quici and a base hit by Wernoski brought home Schmitt and Webb to give the home team a 3-2 edge.
  • The Eagles reclaimed the lead with two in the top of the second, but the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the second. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) led off with a homer, his second of the season, to tie it at 4-4. Webb and Wernoski had two-run doubles and Bush added a run-scoring single to give RMC a 9-4 lead.
  • Schmitt tripled with one away in the third and scored when Webb reached on an error to make it 10-4.
  • BC pulled within one with five in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets got one back in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew a two-out walk, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a wild pitch as RMC led 11-9.
  • The Eagles used a three-run homer to take a 12-11 lead in the fifth. BC added an insurance run in the top of the ninth before RMC rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Quici was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by Schmitt. A walk to Webb loaded the bases. Quici scored on a double play to make it 13-12. Wernoski battled through an 11-pitch at-bat to draw a walk but was forced out at second to end the contest.

  • Wernoski went 2 for 5 with a walk, four RBI and one run. He has reached base safely in 22 straight games. He has seven multiple-RBI games, ties for second on the team.
  • Webb was 3 for 5 with a walk, two runs and three RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 19 games, four away from the program record. Webb leads the team with 14 multi-hit games and is ties for second with seven multiple-RBI games.
  • Quici went 2 for 5 with three runs. He has reached base safely in 24 straight games.
  • Schmitt was 3 for 5 with a walk and three runs.
  • Bush went 3 for 3 with a homer, two walks, three steals and two RBI.
  • Senior Cole Stamm (Irvington, Va./Middlesex) retired six of the seven batters he faced in relief. He had two in scoring position with none out in the second. Freshman Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) made a diving catch on a foul ball in right that did not allow the runner to score from third. Stamm got a popout and fielder's choice to strand two in scoring position. He retired the Eagles in order in the third.
  • Sophomore William Wian (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) threw three innings of scoreless relief with two hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
