Bruce Jones was a four-year letterman in football and a three-year starter who became a 1985 All-American. He played strong safety three seasons and then moved to cornerback as a senior and was selected first-team All-American as a senior by the American Football Coaches Association, Kodak and the Football News.
He set a school record for kick-blocking as a senior with five blocked punts and one blocked field goal and scored five touchdowns in his career as a defensive back. UNA compiled a 37-7-4 record in Jones' four seasons with the Lions and he was a leader on UNA's 1985 squad that finished 12-2 and reached the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1983 with an 11-1-1 record. He was a member of Gulf South Conference championship teams in 1983 and 1985 and was a first-team All-GSC pick in 1985. During Jones senior season, UNA finished second nationally in pass defense, second nationally in scoring defense and fourth nationally in total defense.
UNA led the GSC in all four defensive categories in 1985. UNA led the GSC in scoring defense all four years of Jones career and was first in total defense three times, while posting a 21-0-2 regular-season home record during his career. He had 10 career interceptions that he returned for 172 yards, broke-up 23 passes and made 164 career tackles.
He was named to the 50th Anniversary UNA Football Team for 1949-98. He was selected for the Times Daily's First Forty Years UNA Football Team and to the Gulf South Conference's Team of the Decade for the 1980s. He was chosen as UNAs Outstanding Defensive Back in 1985.
A native of Courtland, Ala., he received his B.S. degree in Social Work from UNA in 1987.
