Available in full today, Feb. 23, is 10,000 Volts — a brand new studio album from the “Spaceman” himself, Ace Frehley.
Its loud, proud sound is at times reminiscent of Frehley’s 1978 self-titled solo album, perhaps due in part to the involvement of Trixter guitarist Steve Brown — who co-produced the album and co-penned all the songs.
Frehley explained how that came about in our recent feature interview:
Well, my girlfriend/fiancée Lara was after me to work with Steve because she was a big fan of Trixter and was good friends with Steve. I remember coming out of the studio, which is in my basement, and I said to her, “The stuff that I’m recording is not knocking me out.” She goes, “Do me a favor, please call Steve Brown because he’s a great songwriter, great guitar player, great person, great singer.”
“So I called Steve, and he was so excited to work together. He’s a huge fan of mine. ”

There’s one song, “Blinded,” which finds Frehley addressing the ominous creep of artificial intelligence.
He explains:
“Some scientists say it’s already too late. The robots are going to take us out in five to ten years. There was a forum about AI not that long ago attended by a lot of CEOs, scientists, and computer experts, and 43% of them said AI is going to kill us in five to ten years once they become self-aware. Everything in the world is run with computers. I mean, you take a robot that Google makes. That robot has access to 20,000 computers. He can beat any chess player in the world, anybody.
“Humans are slowly, slowly going to become obsolete, except a guy like me. [laughs] A computer will never play like me.”
Frehley is also particularly excited about the music video for “Cherry Medicine,” a standout track on the record.
“I think they really connected with that song because of the line, ‘you make me feel better when you’re in your black leather.’ I just got off the phone with the record company, and they got a $20,000 budget for the “Cherry Medicine” video, which is going to coincide with the release of the record. We’re going to have six chicks in black leather and some cool stuff. I don’t want to give too much away.”

In all, it’s another blast of rock and roll precision from a living legend — so turn it up loud and enjoy.
