Description
Aristippus (c.435 BCE - c.356 BCE), Greek philosopher. Aristippus lived in Cyrene, and is considered the founder of the Cyreniac school of philosophy. Although a pupil of Socrates, his philosophy was very different. He taught that to be happy one must adapt circumstances to oneself and to maintain control over adversity and prosperity, effectively denying the influence of fate. He lived a life of luxury, taking payment for his teachings. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656.
