Info

The protruding oscula, the tubular channels in the sponge tissue of Haliclona (Reniera) cratera, are conspicuous, as are the very small, visible inhalation pores.
The sponge exhibits a massive, branched or encrusting form and has a tough consistency

The coloration of live sponges is a light orange or pink shade.

In the sea, the sponge is often found on very deep, hard bottoms, but also in caves, where the sometimes very numerous can be observed.
Haliclona (Reniera) cratera settles as an epibiont on marine sponges of the genus Ircinia and can reach a length of up to 10 cm in aquaria, however, a very stable water temperature is a prerequisite.

Marine sponges have been shown to be a rich source of bioactive metabolites with diverse pharmacological properties, in addition to their purification function.
In one study, the antifungal and antibacterial activities of methanol extracts from Cliona, Haliclona cratera, Hyrtios cavernosus, Spongia obscura, Sarcotragus foetidus and Xestospongia carbonaria, as well as fractions from X. carbonaria, S. obscura and H. cratera were investigated.
