Configure Your Browser

You need to configure your web browser's mime-type so that it will execute the RealPlayer when you click a RealPlayer link in a web page. Versions 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 of Netscape do this differently.

Netscape 2.0

  1. If you are not already in the rvplayer5.0 directory, change directories to that directory.

  2. Type the following commands:
         cat Mailcap >> $HOME/.mailcap
         cat Mime.types >> $HOME/.mime.types

  3. Make sure that your web browser points to your .mailcap and .mime.types files.

  4. In Netscape, choose General Preferences from the Options menu. Then choose Helpers.

  5. The Personal Types File box should contain the directory location of your .mime.types file. The Personal Mailcap File box should contain the directory location of your .mailcap file. These files are typically located in your home directory.

Netscape 3.0

  1. In Netscape, choose General Preferences from the Options menu. Then choose Helpers.

  2. In the MIME Configuration Files list, select the item audio/x-pn-realaudio if this exists, then press the Edit button. Add the suffix ".rm" to the Suffix list and change the Handle by Application to rvplayer %s. There should be three suffixes in the list: ".rm,.ra,.ram".

  3. If there is no audio/x-pn-realaudio entry in the list, then press the New button. Enter the following information in the appropriate text boxes.
         Description: RealPlayer 5.0
         Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
         Suffix: .rm,.ra,.ram

Check the Handle By Application checkbox and add rvplayer %s.

  4. Save the new Helper information and exit the dialog box.

Netscape 4.0

  1. In Netscape, choose Preferences from the Edit menu.

  2. In the Preferences dialog, Select the category Navigator->Applications.

  4. If there is no "RealAudio" entry in the list, then press the New button. Enter the following information in the appropriate text boxes.
         Description: RealPlayer 5.0
         MIMEType: audio/x-pn-realaudio
         Suffixes: .rm,.ra,.ram

Check the Handle By Application checkbox and add rvplayer %s.

To verify that the browser is configured correctly by clicking the home button (located on the far right hand side of the Player above the volume slider) on the Player. This displays the RealPlayer home page on your default browser. Now click any RealPlayer link, such as the NPR Morning Edition URL.
