American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) captured the essence of the New York cultural scene in the late 1970s and 1980s through his portraits of artists, writers, musicians, designers, dealers, actors, and actresses. Though known to many for his controversial sexual images, Mapplethorpe’s most lasting legacy--and the largest portion of his oeuvre--is his striking portraiture. This exhibition includes some one hundred portraits of such noted figures as William Burroughs, Truman Capote, Marianne Faithfull, David Hockney, Grace Jones, Roy Lichtenstein, Brice Marden, Lisette Model, Alice Neel, Iggy Pop, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol. Organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum, California.

This exhibition has been organized by the Palms Spring Art Museum, Palm Springs, California, with the assistance of Guest Curator Gordon Baldwin. The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Helene & Lou Galen Exhibition Fund and the Faye & Herman Sarkowsky Exhibition Fund.
