Helps bring about the physical changes that turn a girl into a woman. This occurs during puberty. Some changes that occur: Growth of the breasts Growth of pubic and underarm hair Start of menstrual cycle

Brings out male physical changes that turn a boy into a man. Testosterone is created in the Testes. Some changes that occur: Growth of the penis and testes Growth of facial, pubic and body hair Deepening of the voice Building of muscles and strong bones

7 Primary characteristics of puberty
Primary sex characteristics refer to changes to the sexual organs themselves (uterus, vagina, penis, and testes) It involves both males and females.

8 Primary sex characteristics for males (boys)
Primary sex characteristic changes for boys include the enlargement of the testes, penis, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles. These changes normally begin to occur between the ages of 9 and 14 years. Their growth is generally completed between ages 12 and 16 years.

9 Primary sex characteristics for females (girls)
Some changes that occur to females include: The budding stage of development (breast elevation) and the rounding of the hip begins The uterus, vagina, labia and clitoris increase in size Pubic hair growth becomes rapid and is slightly pigmented Menarche occurs (first occurrence of menstruation)

Secondary sexual characteristics are those that emerge during the prepubescent through post pubescent phases They are visible changes such as: Growth of hair Change in body shapes for both males and females

Growth of testicles Growth of pubic hair Chest becomes larger Growth of armpit hair Muscle growth Voice becomes deeper

Enlargement of breasts Enlargement of uterus and vagina Narrowing of shoulders Widening of hips (for child bearing) High pitched voice Growth of pubic hair

15 Why do these changes occur?
So that the human body is capable of reproduction If puberty did not occur we would not be able to have babies, which in turn means no human race!
