3 National Security Language Initiative for Youth
NSLI-Y Goal: To increase the number of American youth learning critical languages that are less frequently taught in the U.S. but important to our engagement in the world. Summer (6-8 weeks) or academic year overseas to study the language, live with a host family, and experience the culture. Eight Languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Turkish, Persian, and Russian Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State

4 National Security Language Initiative for Youth

5 Other Youth Exchange Programs
Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX): Study German culture and language; academic year. Youth Exchange and Study Abroad (YES Abroad): Explore countries with significant Muslim populations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, or the Balkans; academic year. Youth Ambassadors: Learn about civic education, conduct community service, and develop leadership skills in Central and South America; short-term exchanges. 6 Hosting Opportunities
Learn about other cultures and languages through hosting an international exchange student. The Department of State brings about 2,000 international high school exchange students to the U.S. from over 50 countries each year. 7 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
Fully-funded summer language immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to learn critical foreign languages. CLS Program Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State

9 Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship
Supports U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. Eligibility U.S. citizen Undergraduate student Receive Federal Pell Grant Funding Study or intern abroad for at least two weeks (community colleges) or three weeks (four-year institutions) on a program eligible for credit Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State

10 Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship

11 Fulbright U.S. Student Program Critical Language Enhancement Award (CLEA)
Offered to Fulbright U.S. Student grantees Typically from three to six months of intensive language study Requires the use of one of the eligible languages for the Fulbright project and beyond Language instruction providers and duration of programs vary. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State

12 Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching
One semester abroad pursuing individualized projects. Participants include language teachers and other K-12 educators. Short term option: 2-6 weeks in response to request from Fulbright Commission abroad. Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Online course, symposium, and 2-3 week exchange. Participants include language teachers and other K-12 educators. FulbrightTeacherexchange.org Program applications open in the fall; decisions are made in the spring/summer Language teachers benefit from the Distinguished program by working on specific methodology or cultural projects. In Teachers for Global Classrooms language teachers can improve their language and gain authentic experiences in the culture

13 Teachers of Critical Languages Program
K-12 schools host teachers from China, Egypt or Morocco Who teach Mandarin Chinese or Arabic for an academic year, either establishing or expanding an existing program. TCLprogram.org
