2 Learning Objectives Define and identify types of natural resources. Explain the difference between inexhaustible and exhaustible resources. Propose ways for conserving natural resources.

3 Types of Natural Resources  Resources that occur naturally in nature are known as natural resources.  Natural resources can be found in our environment.  The environment are the conditions that surround us.

4  Natural resources cannot be made by man, but man can help ensure their continued existence.  People need many natural resources to live.  Other natural resources are used to make life easier.

5 Natural Resources include  Air and wind  Fossil fuels  Minerals  People  Soil  Sunlight  Water  Wildlife

6 Inexhaustible and Exhaustible Natural Resources Exhaustibility refers to whether or not a natural resource can be replenished as it is used. These resources are present in unlimited quantity in nature and are not likely to be exhausted by human activities.

7 Inexhaustible Natural Resource A resource that is continuously replenished, the supply of the resource will not run out. Sunlight, wind, and water are inexhaustible natural resources.

8 Exhaustible Natural Resource A resource that is available in limited quantity and can be completely used. Exhaustible resources can be replaceable or irreplaceable. A replaceable natural resource can be replenished. Most wildlife are replaceable. An irreplaceable natural resource is gone once it is used. Fossil fuels and most minerals are irreplaceable.

9 Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are natural resources used to provide energy. Fossil fuels took millions of years to make. They are the remains of decomposed plants and animals. Their energy comes from the energy produced by the plants and animals.

10 Fossil Fuels include Petroleum Natural gas Coal

11 Petroleum Liquid form of fossil fuels used to make gasoline and oils.

12 Natural Gas Gaseous form of fossil fuels used in heating and cooking.

13 Coal Solid form of fossil fuels used in factories and generating electricity. Coal is processed in industry to get some useful products such as coke, coal tar and coal gas.

14 Coke It is a tough,porous and black substance. It is almost pure form of carbon. Coke is used in the manufacture of steel.

15 Coal tar It is a black, thick liquid with unpleasant smell. Products obtained from coal tar are used for manufacturing various substances used in everyday life and in industry, like synthetic dyes,drugs, explosives, perfumes, plastics, paints, photographic materials, roofing, materials,etc.

16 Coal gas Coal gas is obtained during the processing of coal to get coke The light from the sun produces solar energy.

17 Conservation of natural resources Coal and petroleum are exhaustible natural resources. It takes millions of years to convert dead organism into fossil fuels. Burning of fossil fuels causes air pollution. Use of these fossil fuels also causes global warming. Therefore these fuels should be used only when absolutely necessary.

18 Conservation of natural resources In order to conserve petrol and diesel : Drive at a constant and moderate speed as far as possible Switch off the engine at traffic lights or at a place where you have to wait, Ensure correct tyre pressure, and Ensure regular maintenance of the vehicle.
