Description of Sapienza University of Rome

Sapienza (L'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza") or Uniroma1 for short is an Italian state university located in Rome. It is one of the oldest universities in the world. Its history begins in 1303, when Boniface VIII ordered the creation of a church educational institution “Studio Urbis”. Its task was to train theologians and specialists for the papal administration. In 1660, Studio Urbis was moved to a new building, and was named Sapienza in Latin for "wisdom".

Since 1870, the university ceases to be a papal university and develops as a secular educational institution. In 1935, in the center of Rome, near the Termini station, according to the project of the architect Marcello Piacentini, the construction of the “Citta universitaria” university campus was completed. It occupies 429.000 m². This is the main campus of the university, which houses the main faculties and buildings. Sapienza is the largest university in Europe with 117,000 students. After the administrative reform of 2010, the university has 11 faculties, 60 departments, one school of astrophysics, as well as 21 museums and 50 libraries.

Among all international rankings among Italian universities, Sapienza occupies a leading position, and in terms of the profile of classical studies and ancient history, according to the QS World University Rankings, it ranks first in the world, surpassing English Oxford. Sapienza is also included in the top 100 universities in the world. Sapienza is inextricably linked with the history of Italy. Several generations of Italians, many representatives of the country's political elite studied there. Also, many outstanding scientists teach at this university. In 2021, Giorgio Parisi received the Nobel Prize in Physics.
