They offer a free, high-tech gym to community members in the Fairfax neighborhood of Cleveland.

Marcio Griebeler, the director of the Obesity Center with Cleveland Clinic’s Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute, said the gym offers user-friendly professional-level exercise equipment that guides users step by step.

“We talked with community leaders, and as we received a very generous donation, our idea was to reach out to the community and help them to become healthier,” Griebeler said. “So we had the idea of this smart gym, and the idea is actually to make sure that everyone can have access to top-notch technology that will really make a difference on their health.”

Chase Holmes is program manager in Cleveland Clinic Community Health & Partnerships. He said gym members are able to keep track of their workouts by using a smart-band that syncs up with the equipment.

“He’s actually already been calibrated as far as his height and his range of motion, because you can tell by his band on his right side, that gets him calibrated to all of the equipment so they already know what his range of motion is, as well as his max strength and based on his one-rep max they can produce the best resistance for his workout depending on the type of exercise,” Holmes said.

Brad Robison was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2010. He said working out at this smart gym has positively changed his life.

“That was 13 years ago," Robinson said. "They said probably in 10 years I'd be in a wheelchair, but here I am. I always say MS is what I have. It’s not who I am. So instead of that disease defining me, I’m going to define that disease.”

So far, more than 450 people have registered for this high-tech gym.
