MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Art Museum’s Día de los Muertos event is back this fall, marking the first time since 2019.

Families are invited to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, which brings family and friends together to honor loved ones who have passed on. They can learn about the holiday’s traditions through several hands-on activities, from making paper flowers to adding remembrances of someone special who has passed to the community ofrenda.

"Family Sundays: Día de los Muertos" is scheduled for 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Activities include the following:

  • Hands-on art making (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) 
    Add to the community ofrenda; make butterfly paintings, skeleton figures, jewelry and paper flowers
  • Student art exhibition (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) 
    Enjoy art by students from Carollton Elementary, Escuela Vieau and Notre Dame Elementary
  • Meet Wisconsin artists (11 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
    Meet Gabriela Jiménez Marván, who will display cartonería skeletons, and Richie Morales, who will show his vibrant paintings

Performances include:

  • Dance performance and lesson with Alejandra Jiménez Marván at 11 a.m.
  • Story time with the Milwaukee Public Library at 12:30 p.m.
  • Drop-in tour: Artists of Mexican Heritage at 1 p.m.
  • Latino Arts Strings Program: “Mariachi Juvenil Grandes Lagos” at 2 p.m.

The event is included with the cost of admission to the Milwaukee Art Museum. It is $22 for adults, $17 for students, seniors and members of the military, and free to kids 12 and under, as well as to general members. It is also free to Wisconsin K–12 teachers, with a valid school ID or paystub.

The museum has partnered with local artists and organizations to celebrate Día de los Muertos for more than 25 years.
