Planting peonies

According to the Farmers’ Almanac, peony plants are in full bloom mid-May through early June.

If you’re looking to plant your own peonies, look to do so late September into early October.

I was talking with my mom about gardening and she told me how you shouldn’t plant a peony plant near your house. The reason? Ants.

Although seeing dozens of ants around a plant may be alarming, it’s a good thing for peonies. The ants are attracted to the bud’s nectar, and while enjoying its sweet liquid, the ants are also getting rid of pests that could harm the peony plant.

On top of finding a location away from the house, peonies need ample room and sunlight in order to have a successful bloom.

If you want to take in the peony plant in all its glory, head on out to Ovans Peony Farm in Beaver Dam for the third annual Wisconsin Arts and Peony Festival. The festival takes place on Saturday, June 10, but other activities will go on in different locations around Beaver Dam from June 8 to 13.
