Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Celerio chamyla. Implicitly transferred to Hyles by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 184. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Pittaway, 1993, The hawkmoths of the Western Palaearctic: 153. Implicitly reinstated as a subspecies of Hyles chamyla by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.10. Pittaway (1997-onwards) (STI 19617) considered apocyni applied to larger and darker specimens of Hyles chamyla that resulted from larvae that fed on cultivated Apocynum in more humid environments. Raised to species status by Danner, Eitschberger & Surholt, 1998, Herbipoliana 4 (1): 205, 299, but without any explicit argumentation for so doing. Implicitly synonymized with Hyles chamyla as an “ecological subspecies” (here interpreted as an environmentally induced form) by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko, 2019, Hawkmoths of Russia and adjacent territories: 389, 453. Hyles chamyla form apocyni was demonstrated to be a hybrid between Hyles chamyla and Hyles hippophaes bienerti by Patzold et al., 2021, Diversity. 13 (5): 213 (17).
